Former UConn Basketball Coach Kevin Ollie Faces Several NCAA Allegations Of Wrongdoing

The NCAA, completing its yearlong investigation intoA UConnA mena€™s basketball, hit former coachA Kevin OllieA with an unethical conduct charge, and alleged several other rules violations in a notice of allegations sent to both Ollie and the university Friday.

The most serious is a a€œLevel Onea€ charge that Ollie provided false or misleading information regarding phone calls from Ray Allen and Rudy Gay to a recruit. The crux of the charges in the document, released late Friday night after details were published byA ESPN, stem from Ollie providing false and misleading information about possible violations during the investigation, such as denying he had knowledge of players working with an outside trainer, Derrek Hamilton, in Storrs and Atlanta.

The notice reads:

a€œThe enforcement staff believes a hearing panel of the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions could conclude [providing misleading information] is a severe breach of conduct [Level I] because the violation involved unethical or dishonest conduct, which seriously undermined or threatened the integrity of the NCAA Collegiate Model.a€

If the allegations stand up, Ollie could be penalized with a a€œshow-causea€ order, which could result in penalties assessed if he is at another school. But more serious is the impact this could have on UConna€™s attempt to fire Ollie for a€œjust cause,a€ and avoid paying him the more than $10 million he is owed on his contract. Ollie, his lawyers and the American Association of University Professors are fighting the decision, and the dispute is headed to arbitration. The findings generally supports UConn claims.

a€œCoach Ollie strongly disputes the details of the allegations made in the NCAAa€™s notice and is disappointed that the NCAA has chosen to align itself with the University of Connecticut in the pending arbitration,a€ said Jacques Parenteau, Olliea€™s attorney, in a statement released Friday. a€œCoach Ollie denies engaging in any conduct that would constitute non-compliance with NCAA rules and regulations and looks forward to defending himself and restoring his reputation.a€

UConn was not named as a culprit in the notice of allegations. Sanctions against the program could come from this, but UConn, having already fired Ollie, could impose its own sanctions and perhaps avoid more serious penalties from the NCAA.
